My mother led me to Jesus when I was five years old. She wasn’t perfect, but she loved her six children so much that to this day we all claim that we were her favorite—because she made us feel that way. Mama was a prayer warrior, and we would often go to her with our deepest needs, concerns, and challenges. She’s with Jesus now, but I miss her every day.
When we were struggling with a personal pain-point, her first words were, “Have you prayed about it yet?”
If you had a godly mom, here are some ways you can bless her this week.
1. Speak blessing over her.
Words have power. Proverbs 18:21 reminds us, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue.” Use your words to affirm her sacrifices, wisdom, and faith. A heartfelt “thank you” can go deeper than you imagine.
Christine Caine says, “When we speak life into someone, we reflect the very heart of God.”
Action: Write or speak a blessing over your mom this week—be specific about what you admire.
2. Pray for her daily.
Mothers carry many burdens. Even godly moms need covering. Lift her up to the Father in prayer—for her health, her walk with Jesus, her peace, and her continued legacy.
Action: Create a prayer list just for your mom. Give her a copy and let her know you are praying for her in these specific ways for the next 30 days.
3. Listen to her wisdom.
A godly mom often speaks from a well of experience and spiritual discernment. Proverbs 1:8 instructs: “Do not forsake your mother’s teaching.”
Charles Spurgeon once said, “I cannot tell how much I owe to the prayers of my good mother.”
Action: Ask your mom what she’s been learning in God’s Word lately, and truly listen.
4. Serve her in love.
Honor is shown in action. Galatians 5:13 calls us to “serve one another humbly in love.” Do the dishes, plan a surprise, run an errand—small things show big love.
Action: Do something this week that lightens her load without being asked.
5. Share her legacy.
Tell her stories. Preserve her prayers and values. Psalm 145:4 says, “One generation commends your works to another.”
Action: Record or write down her testimony and what she’s passed on spiritually—share it with your children, a friend, or with your small group.
6. Show up.
Time is one of the most honoring gifts. Whether in person or on a video call, make space for her presence.
Anne Graham Lotz wrote: “God chose your mother for you. Honor her.”
Action: Schedule quality time with your mom—schedule a time to take her out for lunch or coffee. If distance is a challenge, schedule a time for a meaningful catch-up connection by phone or by video.
7. Support her ministry.
Many godly women lead, mentor, or serve in ministry. Encourage and fund what God has placed on her heart.
Action: Ask how you can pray for and support the ministry God has called her to—even financially if possible.
8. Forgive where needed.
No mom is perfect. Honoring your mom doesn’t require pretending—it requires grace. Ephesians 4:32 says, “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”
Beth Moore shared, “Forgiveness isn’t saying it was okay; it’s saying God is greater.”
Action: If wounds linger, begin the journey of healing through forgiveness—for your freedom and her honor.
Final Challenge:
Whether your mother was a Proverbs 31 woman or a deeply flawed figure, God calls us to be people of honor. If your mom was a godly influence, thank God and honor her well. If your story is marked by pain, choose to break the cycle—by becoming the godly legacy you didn’t receive.
“Honor your father and your mother…so that it may go well with you” (Ephesians 6:2–3).
If you did have a godly mom, the way you honor her reflects how you honor God. Let your words, actions, and life declare: “Thank you, Mom—for pointing me to Jesus.”
Motherhood is one of God’s most sacred callings. Proverbs 31:28 says, “Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her.” To honor a godly mom is not just an annual tradition—it’s something the Bible says is important.
Question: What is one of the most important things you learned from your mom?

Your precious and godly words bring insightful ways to overcome and love in grace. May Mother’s Day bring joy to your heart in unexpected ways. You are also a spiritual mom to many who may be logistically far from you to give you that HUG and loving appreciation. I’ve benefited from attending a couple of your Speak-Up conferences and training in Grand Rapids. Also, you (and Gene) have spoken at my church, Community Christian Church in Sterling Heights, Michigan a couple of times. I am thankful for you and speak the spirit of joy, life, and grace over you as the Holy Spirit’s power resides in your presence for a lifetime. Blessings and kindness in abundance – Connie
Thank you for your encouraging note, Connie! I have very special memories of speaking at Community Christian Church. Have a blessed Mother’s Day weekend!
